Using Kangaroo - FAQs and possible problems

There are some very common problems that have a straightforward solution, whether you are using a ‘stand alone’ or networked PC.

To avoid possible problems during installation, please check that your PC meets the following system requirements:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or above
  • Apple QuickTime
  • Microsoft SAPI 4 Speech Engine (available in support area of disc)
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or above
  • Adobe Flash Player 9 or above
Associated software:

Download either Adobe reader or Adobe Flash Player at: http://www.adobe.com/

UNINSTALL: It is recommended that you uninstall any previous versions completely before proceeding.

To uninstall: run Start > Programs > Kangaroo x > Uninstall Kangaroo x and follow the instructions on screen.

Q: “I’ve put my Kangaroo disc into the disc drive but nothing is happening!”

A: Kangaroo installation will start up automatically on most PCs. If it doesn’t on yours, go to Start, Run D:SetUp.exe (where d: is the letter of your CD-ROM drive) OR double-click the Kangaroo icon on the CD-ROM.

Q:  “Does Kangaroo run on Macs?”

A: No, it is a program for PCs only

Q: “I cannot hear any sound - no ‘text to speech’, nothing on the Virtual Job Interview!”

A: First of all, check that the sound is turned ‘on’ and the speech is turned ‘on’ on the main board (under the yellow band in the centre panel) and then:

  • Still no sound? Check that the volume is ‘ON’ or click off the ‘mute’ on the volume control on your PC.
  • Still nothing? For text to speech, check you have the SAPI 4 speech engine software loaded (available in the ‘support area’ on the disc)
  • For the Virtual Job Interviews, and other video clips, ensure that you have downloaded 'Quicktime’: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
  • Still having difficulties? Contact your local Connexions Information Team (details below)

Q: Kangaroo program does not launch (won't install due to our file associations and problems with the initial shortcut) - what can we do?

A: See the 'Kangaroo fails to load' attachment below for info...
The shortcut created by the installation points directly to: W:kangaroolaunch.hta (W being the network drive)

The hta extension is run by a Microsoft application mshta.exe and this can be found in C:WINDOWSsystem32

So, by changing the target location in the shortcut to: C:WINDOWSsystem32mshta.exe "W:kangaroolaunch.hta", this points to mshta.exe first and then to launch.hta inside the Kangaroo directory.

Kangaroo now loads.

Q: Any tips for installing on an RM CC3 system?

Posted by: Gareth Stott, Colonel Frank Seely School, Nottinghamshire...

I made 2 alterations to the way the program was installed and since it works, I don’t really want to check and see which one solved the problem or if it was both!

The 2 changes I made (for the RM system) were:

(i) Installed the program to the RMShared drive.

(ii) In the RM Management Console, added the 3 .exe files in the data/apps folder to be allowed to run without restriction.

After about 30 mins to 1 hour, the program started to work on the network.

I hope this helps for somebody else or for you to check on a RM CC3 system.

Q: “I cannot open document links”

A: Ensure that you have Adobe Reader: http://www.adobe.com/

  • Still not opening? Contact your local Connexions Information Team

Q: “Web links won’t open!”

A: Check another web link on Kangaroo, if this is fine, and the problem is with just one, then please e-mail kangaroo@cnxnotts.co.uk about it– it will need investigating.

  • If several links are not working, check that your Internet access, it might be temporarily unavailable. If your Internet connection is fine, report the problem to kangaroo@cnxnotts.co.uk

Q: “I cannot see the video clips and I get a black screen on the Virtual Job Interview!”

A:Make sure you have downloaded Quicktime – the video clips will not run without it. Go to: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html

Make sure that Adobe Flash Player 9 or above is installed, some videos will not run when Flash Player 9 is missing or a legacy version is present. Go to: http://www.adobe.com/

Q: “I haven’t got Internet access – can I still use Kangaroo on a 'stand alone PC'?”

A: Yes, but you will not be able to open the web-links. You will also have to check that you already have Adobe Reader and Quicktime installed (see above).
